Era 1, Episode 10, The Bible Breakthrough Show Notes Genesis 9:1-17 God Confirms His Covenant

9 Then God blessed Noah and his sons and told them, “Be fruitful and multiply. Fill the earth. 2 All the animals of the earth, all the birds of the sky, all the small animals that scurry along the ground, and all the fish in the sea will look on you with fear and terror. I have placed them in your power. 3 I have given them to you for food, just as I have given you grain and vegetables. 4 But you must never eat any meat that still has the lifeblood in it. 5 “And I will require the blood of anyone who takes another person’s life. If a wild animal kills a person, it must die. And anyone who murders a fellow human must die. 6 If anyone takes a human life, that person’s life will also be taken by human hands. For God made human beings[a] in his own image. 7 Now be fruitful and multiply, and repopulate the earth.” 8 Then God told Noah and his sons, 9 “I hereby confirm my covenant with you and your descendants, 10 and with all the animals that were on the boat with you—the birds, the livestock, and all the wild animals—every living creature on earth. 11 Yes, I am confirming my covenant with you. Never again will floodwaters kill all living creatures; never again will a flood destroy the earth.” 12 Then God said, “I am giving you a sign of my covenant with you and with all living creatures, for all generations to come. 13 I have placed my rainbow in the clouds. It is the sign of my covenant with you and with all the earth. 14 When I send clouds over the earth, the rainbow will appear in the clouds, 15 and I will remember my covenant with you and with all living creatures. Never again will the floodwaters destroy all life. 16 When I see the rainbow in the clouds, I will remember the eternal covenant between God and every living creature on earth.” 17 Then God said to Noah, “Yes, this rainbow is the sign of the covenant I am confirming with all the creatures on earth.”

I. The human race is again reduced to a family, the family of Noah, and from this

family, we are all descendants. Here is:

A. The covenant to care for Noah and his sons. In this covenant:

1. God promises them to take care of their lives, so that:

a. They should replenish the earth

b. They should be safe from the insults of the brute-creatures, which should stand in awe of them

c. They should be allowed to eat flesh for the support of their lives; only they must not eat blood

d. The world should never be drowned again

B. God requires of them to take care of one another’s lives, and of their own

C. The seal of the covenant, namely, the rainbow

II. Key Points:

A. God blessed Noah and his sons and tells them to repopulate the earth

B. God gives the animals for food to be eaten

C. God decrees that murderers must be put to death by humans

D. God provides the rainbow as a sign of His covenant

III. Questions: A. The blessing of repopulating the earth led to sin and wickedness the first time around, why would God do this again?

B. To this point, only vegetation was permissible for food, now God allows humans to eat meat but puts restrictions on it, why?

C. Why is God so emphatic that He will never destroy humanity by flooding the earth again?

IV. Application:

A.  Do you ever wonder if you are good enough? What has this taught you?

B.  Do you ever wonder if you have been abandoned? What has this taught you?

C. What are you going to do about it?

Pastor Dave

Hi, my name is Pastor Dave Engman, and this is my co-host, Scott Brekke. We want to welcome you to the Bible Breakthrough, and thank you for joining us. Please remember that ultimately our goal is to lead you into a deeper, more intimate relationship with our Savior, Jesus.

00; 00; 44; 16 - 00; 01; 06; 06

Scott

Yeah! So please look for the bonus to this episode as we discuss various topics that come up because of the Scripture we cover today. And we're going to cover that in this episode. Also, the show notes will be link in the description of this production. In the last episode, we read Genesis 8:1 through 22, and we learned about the receding flood and the New Covenant.

00; 01; 06; 14 - 00; 01; 28; 17

Scott

The scripture we're going to be covering today is Genesis 9:1 through 17, repopulating the earth, and watching as God confirms his covenant, his new covenant with us. So just a quick reminder, the questions you should be considering as you listen are what does this mean? How can I apply what I've learned and how can I put that to my life today?

00; 01; 29; 06 - 00; 02; 03; 12

Scott

So before we open the Bible and read, let us pray… Lord, your word says that the student is never above the teacher. And Lord, I pray that as we read and as we discuss, Lord, that we would be inspired by the Holy Spirit to be able to teach what you want us to say. So, Lord Father, as we become like the teacher Father, that ultimately that teacher is You! So, Lord, help us to do a good job at that Lord. We want to spread your word, in Jesus mighty name. Amen.

00; 02; 04; 24 - 00; 02; 07; 14

Pastor Dave

Amen! And amen to that!

00; 02; 08; 09 - 00; 02; 08; 17

Scott

So?

00; 02; 09; 11 - 00; 02; 22; 09

Pastor Dave

All right, well. Let's open up the Bible. Let's read the passages out of Genesis 9, we’re going to read the first 17 verses of that passage.

00; 02; 23; 26 - 00; 02; 44; 29

Scott

All right. God confirms his covenant. Then God blessed Noah and his sons and told them, be fruitful and multiply. Fill the earth. All the animals of the earth, all the birds of the sky, all the small animals that scurry along the ground and all the fish in the sea will look on you with fear and terror. I have placed them in your power.

00; 02; 45; 16 - 00; 03; 06; 11

Scott

I have given them to you for food, just as I have given you grain and vegetables. But you must never eat any meat that still has the lifeblood in it. And I will require the blood of anyone who takes another person's life. If a wild animal kills a person, it must die. And anyone who murders a fellow human must die.

00; 03; 07; 01 - 00; 03; 33; 03

Scott

If anyone takes a human life, that person's life will also be taken by human hands. For God has made human beings in his own image now be fruitful and multiply and repopulate the earth. Then God told Noah and his sons, I hereby confirm my covenant with you and your descendants, and with all the animals that were on the boat with you, the birds, the livestock, and all the wild animals, every living creature on earth.

00; 03; 33; 22 - 00; 03; 59; 23

Scott

Yes, I am confirming my covenant with you. Never again will flood waters kill all living creatures. Never again will a flood destroy the earth. Then God said, I am giving you a sign of my covenant with you and with all living creatures for all generations to come, I have placed my rainbow in the clouds. It is the sign of my covenant with you and with all the earth.

00; 04; 00; 15 - 00; 04; 27; 08

Scott

When I send clouds over the earth, the rainbow will appear in the clouds. And I will remember my covenant with you and with all living creatures. Never again will the flood waters destroy all life. When I see the rainbow in the clouds, I will remember the eternal covenant between God and every living creature on earth. Then God said to Noah, yes, this rainbow is the sign of the covenant I'm confirming with all the creatures on the earth

00; 04; 27; 08 - 00; 04; 38; 17

Scott

All right. You have some facts you want to share with us there, Pastor?

00; 04; 40; 02 - 00; 04; 54; 09

Pastor Dave

Well, I'll point out what I think are the key points. First of all, God blessed Noah and his sons. He tells them to repopulate the Earth. God gives the animals for food to be eaten. Which is interesting…

00; 04; 54; 09 - 00; 04; 55; 01

Scott

And that's new.

00; 04; 55; 17 - 00; 05; 17; 04

Pastor Dave

Yeah! God decrees that murderers must be put to death by humans. And then, finally, God provides that rainbow as a sign of his new covenant with us. And so that lays out the key points as I see them. Are there any other ones that I missed from your perspective, Scott?

00; 05; 19; 23 - 00; 05; 46; 20

Scott

I think that… so I just think that the Earth is… everything's a little bit different now after the flood. We'll talk about with God giving animals for food. So, the Earth has changed a little bit. What I would like to talk about just God's you know, he doesn't see or let injustice go unseen.

00; 05; 46; 20 - 00; 06; 08; 26

Scott

So, it talks a little bit about that, with the murdering, when people murder and kill… and then the rainbow, you talked about it. I just think that's a… just a beautiful thing that God put in the sky for both us and him to remember. So that's kind of a little bit of what I have. What do you want to talk about first?

00; 06; 09; 20 - 00; 06; 41; 16

Pastor Dave

All right. Well, I got a question or two. So here's one that I I'd like you to consider; the blessing of repopulating the Earth. In the beginning, when he gave that blessing to Adam and Eve, it led to sin and wickedness, which I would say the first time around. Why would God do this again? Why would he destroy everyone except one family and do it again?

00; 06; 50; 01 - 00; 07; 20; 05

Scott

(long pause) Well, I think that he knows that… I think he's got this ultimate plan. So, of course, we see wickedness come in, so he destroys everyone, but then he saves. So I think it's re-showing his character that even though there's tons of rebellious people that he's still going to save. So nothing's changed… that aspect of, you know, God blessing and telling them to repopulate the Earth.

00; 07; 20; 05 - 00; 07; 29; 00

Scott

I mean, he says it with Adam and Eve, here he says it with Noah and his family and his sons. So nothing's changed on that aspect.

00; 07; 30; 02 - 00; 08; 09; 04

Pastor Dave

Well, you're right. Although, what did change was how long he would be willing to put up with it. Right? Yeah. I mean, he was putting up with it for nine hundred years per person on average, generally. And because of all of that, he's like… no! 120 years is going to be about the extent of my patience. So he gives us that. Which is the longest you could expect to live, more likely, on Earth.

00; 08; 10; 11 - 00; 08; 43; 23

Pastor Dave

Beyond that, the other things that we have tried to discover here is what was he thinking when he destroyed the earth with the flood? If, indeed he wasn’t going to change anything. Right? So we know that sin and wickedness is again filled the earth! But I don't know why God would have decided it was time to wipe the slate clean when he did? And it’s just an interesting thought that I don't know that I have… I don't know that I have an answer to that.

00; 08; 44; 16 - 00; 08; 45; 05

Scott

Yeah. I don't. (laughter)

00; 08; 47; 05 - 00; 09; 03; 29

Pastor Dave

So let me move on to another question. To this point, only vegetation was permitted for food. But now God’s allowing humans to eat meat. But he puts restrictions on it… Why? Why did he put restriction on eating meat?

00; 09; 04; 15 - 00; 09; 31; 05

Scott

Well, it was the blood that obviously made the difference. So something that I studied into a little bit was we know that in the blood, it's the lifeblood. So, you know, before it wasn't, well God says now it is. And also I think what's interesting is now it says that the animals are fearful of them because we've been able to eat them.

00; 09; 31; 08 - 00; 09; 50; 07

Scott

So that the blood life is still in there. God saying, please, you know, you can eat the animals just as it still lives don't do that. So he puts a restriction on it saying, all right, you can eat animals, but not with the lifeblood still in it. Don't do that.

00; 09; 50; 18 - 00; 10; 08; 24

Pastor Dave

In other words, make sure they're dead before you eat them. Yeah, yeah! And I think that points to God’s heart, that, you know, suffering and pain that goes into dying. Even as an animal, and the Lord does not want us to put an animal through that. Yeah.

00; 10; 08; 24 - 00; 10; 20; 23

Scott

Here's a verse in Luke 20 to 25. There should be respect for the blood because the blood would represent the life of the being. Right? So there you go!

00; 10; 21; 08 - 00; 10; 30; 23

Pastor Dave

So why was God so emphatic that he would never do this again? That He would never destroy humanity by flooding the Earth again? Why was he so emphatic about that?

00; 10; 31; 01 - 00; 10; 58; 28

Scott

The loving part, like he would say, is never going to I mean, he saw the evil that was on the earth and decided to wipe it out. So why was he so emphatic not to wipe it out? I mean, he didn't want you don't want to do that again. I mean, his obviously his desire was that all the people I believe, would have gone down that that's just not the reality of it.

00; 10; 58; 28 - 00; 11; 18; 21

Pastor Dave

So, in other words, God gave us an out and he gave humanity an out, although he knew that their hearts were evil. The ark, as you pointed out in earlier conversation, we had kind of represents Jesus in a way. The ark is there… you have a chance to get on it… Get on it and live, or don't and die!

00; 11; 24; 21 - 00; 11; 25; 00

Scott

Yeah.

00; 11; 25; 15 - 00; 11; 58; 00

Pastor Dave

So do you ever wonder if you're good enough? You know, this this kind of points to application, but I wonder how many people that are listening or watching wonder if they're good enough. And the reason I bring that up is this… when asked about heaven or where one would go when they die, after they die, why should somebody get into heaven? And usually the response is, what good person.

00; 11; 59; 09 - 00; 12; 32; 18

Pastor Dave

But we can see that there probably were a lot of good people, even though they were evil back before the flood, yet they weren't on the boat other than the ones that were righteous. So do you ever wonder if you're good enough? And you can't be. That's the answer. You can't be good enough. Because we know from the Bible teaches that from conception we are sinful. And by nature and evil.

00; 12; 33; 07 - 00; 13; 01; 14

Pastor Dave

So there's nothing you can ever do to be good enough. Something had to be done. And I think you hit on something as it pertains to something I never thought about before. And that is that the ark really was a representation of Christ. It was a saving grace. Yeah. That people were if they were righteous, were able to get on. And we know that Noah and the family did get on that boat and they were saved.

00; 13; 01; 25 - 00; 13; 02; 02

Scott

Yeah.

00; 13; 02; 19 - 00; 13; 23; 14

Pastor Dave

So do you ever wonder if you've been abandoned? By God, we talked about this in the last episode. How long it took once they got on that, on that big boat on the ark. And we don’t have any evidence that God spoke to them. So do you wonder, if you were Noah and his family, if you were abandoned?

00; 13; 25; 02 - 00; 13; 53; 22

Pastor Dave

So what has this story taught you that you weren't abandoned? Right. I mean, God did what God said he would do. Even in his silence, he ultimately gave an answer. And that answer was is I haven't forgotten. I haven't forgotten about you and the sign of that covenant is the reminder that I haven’t forgotten about you. Even if you’re not hearing from God when you see that rainbow, you can remember, that God has remembered what he won’t do.

00; 13; 54; 14 - 00; 14; 30; 08

Scott

I want to go back to the point where he said about like how almost like, you know, of course, there's a lot of good people on the earth, but not everybody are. So what's the difference between someone who just like well, I feel like I'm a good person, you know, like if there's a heaven, I have to go there and someone who was found righteous in God's eyes and I just want to burn up a testimony because I and I've talked to people before, I talk just about faith and where they're at and they're like, why?

00; 14; 30; 23 - 00; 15; 02; 20

Scott

I mean, I specifically remember this one guy. I asked him, I was just talking about you know, what do you think of Jesus? And he's like, wow, you know, I'm not sure, but I believe that me and my wife are good people. We're going to go to heaven. You nobody he didn't know Jesus. Like we have someone in our ministry who says, you know, if you're not walking with Jesus super tight like this, and I think each one of us know, like, if you were to ask someone, really, are you walk and do you have close fellowship with Jesus?

00; 15; 02; 20 - 00; 15; 25; 09

Scott

Do you are you walking with them day in and day out and thought and thought out? You know? So I think that was what the difference was between Noah and every other person was and we see that in the Scripture. He was in close fellowship with them where he was told by God to build this heart. And then in that came the saving.

00; 15; 25; 09 - 00; 15; 45; 22

Scott

So my question, I think you would be, you know, how do we know that? Like, what's it what point do we know? OK, I feel like I'm good, but then how do I know I'm good where I know that I'd be on that boat? I know that I'd be safe.

00; 15; 48; 08 - 00; 16; 23; 24

Pastor Dave

Well, the Bible tells us here, of course, that everyone forgot about him, about God, except Noah. You know, remember God, Noah was considered righteous because he didn't forget about God. He considered God. So first thing we have to recognize is, are we considering God? And now today we have the New Testament, of course, and we have the ability to look back and see what God has done, 20/20. That hindsight. Right?

00; 16; 24; 06 - 00; 16; 55; 20

Pastor Dave

We're discussing something at a point in time when Noah’s around, because that’s where we are. Here in the story, in the beginnings. But, fast forward, we have the mindset of 20/20. We have perfect vision. We can see what happened. We know the truth, and the truth is that Jesus is the door and the gate that gets us to heaven. We have to go through Him. So there’s nothing that we can do to be good enough. Period! And something had to be done and it was. It was done.

00; 16; 55; 20 - 00; 17; 24; 29

Pastor Dave

Then with the ark, with Noah and his family, and later on we know something was done with Jesus. So as it pertains to application, the idea that we would recognize the truth for what it is, and that we would make the truth the thing that we are looking for, and when we discover that truth, we will receive the blessings that come with it.

00; 17; 25; 28 - 00; 17; 37; 24

Pastor Dave

So we we've discussed these questions. I threw those out. The final question I talked about was, why is God so emphatically emphatic that he would never destroy humanity and flood the Earth again?

00; 17; 38; 15 - 00; 17; 51; 01

Pastor Dave

So from that question, God being so emphatic about never doing this again, what does this emphasis mean to Noah and to humanity?

00; 18; 00; 20 - 00; 18; 01; 13

Scott

(long pause) So… what was the question?

00; 18; 03; 13 - 00; 18; 15; 05

Pastor Dave

Well, what does it mean to Noah that God said “I will never do this again?” And what does that mean to humanity, that God will never destroy the Earth with the flood again?

00; 18; 15; 27 - 00; 18; 35; 00

Scott

Well, just, it… if I was put in that position to know that if I was Noah, knowing that God was never going to do this again, man, it would make me happy! I'd be ecstatic to know that! And God's never going to do this again. He's never going to flood the earth.

00; 18; 35; 11 - 00; 18; 49; 09

Pastor Dave

Right. And we can see that he hasn't, God keeps his promises. And His word, right? Is the story of the flood and its aftermath, a story of God's wrath?

00; 18; 50; 15 - 00; 19; 07; 04

Scott

Yeah. Yeah. We know that everybody who didn't get on the boat was killed so. Yes, definitely of his wrath. Not going to get on the boat… you're going to die.

00; 19; 07; 29 - 00; 19; 08; 09

Pastor Dave

OK. So death as a consequence?

00; 19; 08; 20 - 00; 19; 11; 13

Scott

Yeah.

00; 19; 12; 00 - 00; 19; 21; 11

Pastor Dave

And the consequence of God's wrath is death. Right. So is that story of the flood and the aftermath, the story of God’s justice?

00; 19; 23; 00 - 00; 20; 02; 19

Scott

Yeah. Because, I mean, I think of you know, something that happened in my life where someone had done something or, you know, I'd want to see that person, I don't know what the, the right word would be… punished? But I just don't want them to get away with it free… you know? Like they… if someone did something wrong, I want to see it not just loosey-goosey, you know? I want to see that person not be able to get away with something that they did was clearly wrong. So his justice, yeah!

00; 20; 05; 10 - 00; 20; 05; 25

Pastor Dave

Okay...(long pause)

00; 20; 09; 18 - 00; 20; 13; 20

Scott

(nervous laughter) Say something! I know you want to say something! You got something right there!

00; 20; 14; 02 - 00; 20; 16; 19

Pastor Dave

Well, you know, it's certainly a story of God's justice.

00; 20; 16; 28 - 00; 20; 17; 20

Scott

Right. Yeah...

00; 20; 17; 24 - 00; 20; 34; 03

Pastor Dave

And God's the one that sits on the throne. God's the one that judges and not necessarily us. However, those that, like Noah, maybe even like you and me… you know, it's our desire to walk in close fellowship with God, right?

00; 20; 34; 03 - 00; 20; 38; 01

Scott

Mm hmm.

00; 20; 38; 10 - 00; 20; 47; 02

Pastor Dave

And our mission is to introduce people to what is true, the saving grace of Christ. And God will deliver justice because God is a God of justice.

00; 20; 47; 02 - 00; 21; 02; 05

Pastor Dave

So do you think in the story of the flood and its aftermath, what was redeemed? Is it a story of God's redemption? What was redeemed?

00; 21; 02; 20 - 00; 21; 12; 28

Scott

Yeah. Noah and his family was saved! Redemption! That he was never going to wipe off the face of the earth, but he was going to repopulate it and start over again.

00; 21; 13; 17 - 00; 21; 17; 15

Pastor Dave

So who was redeemed then? You're saying Noah and his family?

00; 21; 17; 21 - 00; 21; 18; 24

Scott

And the...

00; 21; 18; 24 - 00; 21; 19; 14

Pastor Dave

And humanity!

00; 21; 19; 14 - 00; 21; 19; 23

Scott

Yeah.

00; 21; 19; 23 - 00; 21; 27; 03

Pastor Dave

Humanity was redeemed. Right. All right. Is it a story of God’s mercy or God’s grace?

00; 21; 29; 06 - 00; 21; 40; 29

Scott

Well, both. OK. Again, it was through… God showed mercy on Noah and his family, and his grace prevailed through that.

00; 21; 41; 18 - 00; 21; 43; 03

Pastor Dave

And they received that grace?

00; 21; 43; 04 - 00; 21; 44; 03

Scott

Yeah.

00; 21; 45; 09 - 00; 21; 46; 28

Pastor Dave

OK. Is it a story of God's love?

00; 21; 48; 13 - 00; 21; 49; 21

Scott

Yeah, that he was going to save you!

00; 21; 49; 21 - 00; 22; 03; 21

Pastor Dave

So when we put the emphasis and the focus on the family of Noah, we can see clearly that it was a story of God’s love for humanity. But, what about all the others?

00; 22; 04; 19 - 00; 22; 05; 11

Scott

Of the people?

00; 22; 05; 18 - 00; 22; 07; 24

Pastor Dave

All those that were drowned, and killed?

00; 22; 08; 18 - 00; 22; 08; 28

Scott

Yeah… God’s wrath!

00; 22; 09; 07 - 00; 22; 12; 04

Pastor Dave

We go back to the God's justice, God's wrath… OK

00; 22; 12; 04 - 00; 22; 13; 27

Scott

Yup.

00; 22; 14; 12 - 00; 22; 21; 08

Scott

But so it's interesting that we can get all those things in one story. Right. You think, how can he show wrath? But then also show love?

00; 22; 23; 19 - 00; 22; 30; 20

Pastor Dave

Right. Should the story lead us, as human beings, and readers of the Word, should it lead us to fear God?

00; 22; 32; 25 - 00; 23; 01; 15

Scott

I think it has to. I mean, I know, of course, scriptures that come up the beginning… the fear of the Lord, the beginning of knowledge of understanding and knowing. So it does! I think about in the time of Noah and into this point, are we believing that there will come a point where it's put off, the flood is actually coming?

00; 23; 02; 02 - 00; 23; 23; 23

Scott

You know, I could see people at that time being like, well, there's Noah building his ark! He’s not… this ain't never going to happen. This rain, this flood, none of that's going to happen. There was no fear there. There was no… they just carried on as day by day, just doing the same old stuff they were in no fear. They just kept doing what they wanted to do

00; 23; 24; 01 - 00; 23; 24; 12

Pastor Dave

All right, should this story lead us then to trust God?

00; 23; 24; 12 - 00; 23; 36; 03

Scott

Yeah! Trust him that that he's going to save me. Trusting and having faith that…

00; 23; 36; 24 - 00; 23; 37; 28

Pastor Dave

Why? Why is he going to save you?

00; 23; 39; 17 - 00; 23; 45; 03

Scott

Why? (long pause) Good question! (another long pause)

00; 23; 52; 13 - 00; 24; 17; 04

Scott

Because… that's who he is! That's the nature of God, that he... that there… that's a characteristic of God. It seems like in almost every story, there's always these people that were saved or brought out. You know, we read through how many stories in the Bible where someone's pulled out, or someone’s saved, or someone’s sent to bring a message to save! So, um…

00; 24; 17; 15 - 00; 24; 50; 08

Pastor Dave

Well, and I think too, I think that we have to put things into proper perspective and recognize that we’re created beings. We were created by God, the world and everything in it is God’s. And it’s all God’s story! And he did it because he wants and desires his creation, his humans, and the prize-crown of his creation, to love him and to fellowship with him. It was intended that way from the beginning.

00; 24; 50; 08 - 00; 25; 25; 17

Pastor Dave

Sin, through disobedience, caused all of the havoc that we see in the world and have seen in the world. So really, this story should lead us to not only fear God, also trust God. Lead us to desire to obey God. Right. Because God is a God of love. And he loves those that he’s created. He loves all humanity, and he just desires that humanity love him back.

00; 25; 25; 26 - 00; 25; 26; 04

Scott

Mm hmm.

00; 25; 27; 02 - 00; 26; 00; 23

Pastor Dave

And so… You know, it's truly my sincere desire and hope that the discussion has made you and our listening audience think. And that thought would lead you into the Bible and that you would begin to discover the Truth. And the questions that come out of it that the Lord wants to reveal to you. Any final thoughts before we close out, Scott?

00; 26; 02; 05 - 00; 26; 15; 00

Scott

Well, I'm just going to make this short statement about the rainbow, because we can talk about that. I think it's really important! When you see a rainbow, what do you think of?

00; 26; 16; 22 - 00; 26; 17; 23

Pastor Dave

I think it's beautiful!

00; 26; 18; 13 - 00; 26; 19; 08

Scott

I think it's beautiful, too!

00; 26; 19; 18 - 00; 26; 28; 01

Pastor Dave

I think it is awe inspiring! I think it's one of those things that makes us wonder.

00; 26; 28; 06 - 00; 26; 28; 15

Scott

Yeah.

00; 26; 29; 22 - 00; 26; 44; 20

Pastor Dave

And, you know, truthfully, I think, personally, I think of that covenant. Now, I know the rainbow has been hijacked as a symbol for various groups and so forth, but I think that's irrelevant! I really do!

00; 26; 45; 14 - 00; 26; 47; 26

Scott

Mm hmm.

00; 26; 47; 26 - 00; 26; 54; 10

Pastor Dave

I think that God owns the rainbow. It's his rainbow, and he’s given it to us as a sign for us to remember. And I think we just need to keep our focus on that!

00; 26; 54; 19 - 00; 27; 11; 08

Scott

Yeah. And I think it’s awesome that… all these amazing colors, like you said, the wonder of what it is. But a lot of times, I'll be honest, I'll just say it like, oh, cool, and start taking photos. You know, I don't necessarily think in my mind a lot of time of the covenant, I'll just whip it out, and like, (gesturing taking a picture with his phone) you know?

00; 27; 11; 20 - 00; 27; 38; 16

Scott

But really, going through this, it reminded me of, you know, think of God's covenant with us. But then also when I see it, he thinks of this covenant! Which was neat for me because of course, I think, well, it's just a sign for me. Right. But no! It also says in here that's a sign for God as well. Remembering his covenant with us… so, it’s that two-way partnership of me remembering, but then also God remembering. Yup. I just thought that was kind of neat.

00; 27; 40; 22 - 00; 27; 56; 27

Pastor Dave

And I would just sum up our conversation with the revelation that there is a path that we can follow. God wants us to follow that path. It’s his path. He created it, he created us, and He wants us to follow that path.

00; 27; 57; 21 - 00; 28; 38; 26

Pastor Dave

And we can do that. But there is a consequence to not following that path, and that's true! That’s the truth! And we need to remember the truth that God’s desire is that we would fellowship with him. We live in a period where faith is required… faith is a gift that's been given to us, and we can exercise that faith like a muscle, if you were to work out and build your muscle up. We can exercise that faith. And I think it's critical that people recognize that faith is what it is.

00; 28; 39; 08 - 00; 28; 57; 14

Pastor Dave

God doesn't stand before you, because if he did, it would eliminate faith and he doesn’t hide information in this book, the Bible, from us, he puts it there for us to discover.

00; 28; 57; 26 - 00; 29; 21; 13

Pastor Dave

Yeah. Because when we get into it and the funny thing about this faith journey is, is that the more we get into it, the more questions it creates, the deeper those questions are. Yup. The harder they are to answer. But that's the beauty of it because we begin to continue to focus our attention on the one that gave this to us in the first place. He gave it all to us. Look…

00; 29; 22; 05 - 00; 29; 42; 26

Scott

And I love that because when we read… go through this and we have questions, it just makes like from my own walk through reading the Bible when I'm asking questions, it just makes me want to dive in there more to figure it out. Now, I know I'm not going to figure everything out, but it just makes me want to dive into the word more.

00; 29; 43; 08 - 00; 29; 56; 19

Scott

So questions aren’t bad… like our audience, you know, if you're asking questions, don't think that. Why do I have all these questions? Why am I questioning everything? Don't think that that's a bad thing. We all wrestle with different types of stuff.

00; 29; 56; 20 - 00; 29; 59; 01

Pastor Dave

We were actually created that way.

00; 29; 59; 04 - 00; 29; 59; 13

Scott

Yeah.

00; 29; 59; 18 - 00; 30; 35; 00

Pastor Dave

And it's one of the things that drives us. And in through that process, revelation comes. You know, my deal is this… I desire to come to conclusion. That's how I am. I want to conclude certain things and that’s important to me. But I also do that with the idea that I am open for my mind to be changed. And there are certain things that are what they are. And I’m very good with that. And there are things that lead to speculation… that, you know we just don't really know there's mystery behind it.

00; 30; 35; 00 - 00; 31; 04; 25

Pastor Dave

But let’s keep facts, the facts, and let's recognize that mystery is what it is. We can discuss it and debate it, but let’s not live and die on that hill. No. Let's be open. Look, if you're struggling with any of this stuff, and I'll tell you what you're not alone, OK? We do, we wrestle. And this is good… it’s fun! It's difficult sometimes, and a lot of people struggle.

00; 31; 04; 25 - 00; 31; 30; 19

Pastor Dave

And that's the way it's supposed to be. It's OK. I just want to encourage you to hang in there. Really hang in there, and just keep coming back. If this is good, then share it. Like it, comment on it. If what you’re hearing is good, and even if there’s questions that you have that you’re not sure of, or maybe comments that have been made, that you’re not in agreement with, that’s all right!

00; 31; 31; 05 - 00; 31; 41; 15

Pastor Dave

Yeah. We'd love to hear from you. You can… in the section, in the notes section of this, you can click on and connect with us, email us…

00; 31; 41; 16 - 00; 32; 08; 18

Pastor Dave

About the Podcast

The Bible Breakthrough
Breaking Down the Bible BC to AD
The Bible Breakthrough Podcast breaks down the Bible from BC to AD. In chronological order, we introduce historical context as we journey together from the beginning to the end. Get ready to experience the Bible in a new and fresh way, bringing understanding and revelation like never before, and discovering easy and practical ways to walk out the Bible in your day-to-day.

Have you ever opened your Bible and asked yourself?
• Where should I even start?
• What does this passage mean?
• How does this apply to my life?
• What does this have to do with today?
• Why can’t I understand what He is saying to me through His Word?

What do you do? Couple that with the pressures of daily life, and you, like many Christians, stop reading it altogether.

What is the outcome? Spiritual starvation! We are wired to hunger and thirst for this Word, and when we don’t read the Bible regularly, we begin starving to death spiritually.

If that is you, you are in the right place!

The Bible is a collection of 66 books laid out in “Canonical order,” which means the order in the books is typically arranged. It does not represent the order in which the events of the Bible unfolded, and therefore, for many people, it is just plain confusing.

The Bible Breakthrough will show you how to consume the Word like eating a meal. The Bible reveals ten eras of history, and we have created episodes for each era. We serve scripture to you in small bites that you can swallow and digest to satisfy the spiritual hunger you crave.
