Era 1 Episode 11-Genesis 9:18-10:32

Era 1, Episode 11 Show Notes

The Bible Breakthrough Era 1, Episode 11. In this episode Pastor Dave and Scott Brekke read the second half of Genesis chapter 9 and the entire chapter 10. They discuss the lineage of Noah and how the earth was repopulated by Noah's three sons that accompanied him on the ark (Shem, Ham, and Japheth). We learn which bloodlines the Egyptians and Greeks came from, and that the bloodline of Ham was cursed.

Genesis 9:18-10:32

Noah’s Sons

18 The sons of Noah who came out of the boat with their father were Shem, Ham, and Japheth. (Ham is the father of Canaan.) 19 From these three sons of Noah came all the people who now populate the earth. 20 After the flood, Noah began to cultivate the ground, and he planted a vineyard. 21 One day he drank some wine he had made, and he became drunk and lay naked inside his tent. 22 Ham, the father of Canaan, saw that his father was naked and went outside and told his brothers. 23 Then Shem and Japheth took a robe, held it over their shoulders, and backed into the tent to cover their father. As they did this, they looked the other way so they would not see him naked. 24 When Noah woke up from his stupor, he learned what Ham, his youngest son, had done. 25 Then he cursed Canaan, the son of Ham: “May Canaan be cursed! May he be the lowest of servants to his relatives.” 26 Then Noah said, “May the Lord, the God of Shem, be blessed, and may Canaan be his servant! 27 May God expand the territory of Japheth! May Japheth share the prosperity of Shem, and may Canaan be his servant.” 28 Noah lived another 350 years after the great flood. 29 He lived 950 years, and then he died.

10 This is the account of the families of Shem, Ham, and Japheth, the three sons of Noah. Many children were born to them after the great flood.

Descendants of Japheth

2 The descendants of Japheth were Gomer, Magog, Madai, Javan, Tubal, Meshech, and Tiras. 3 The descendants of Gomer were Ashkenaz, Riphath, and Togarmah. 4 The descendants of Javan were Elishah, Tarshish, Kittim, and Rodanim. 5 Their descendants became the seafaring peoples that spread out to various lands, each identified by its own language, clan, and national identity.

Descendants of Ham

6 The descendants of Ham were Cush, Mizraim, Put, and Canaan. 7 The descendants of Cush were Seba, Havilah, Sabtah, Raamah, and Sabteca. The descendants of Raamah were Sheba and Dedan. 8 Cush was also the ancestor of Nimrod, who was the first heroic warrior on earth. 9 Since he was the greatest hunter in the world, his name became proverbial. People would say, “This man is like Nimrod, the greatest hunter in the world.” 10 He built his kingdom in the land of Babylonia, with the cities of Babylon, Erech, Akkad, and Calneh. 11 From there he expanded his territory to Assyria, building the cities of Nineveh, Rehoboth-ir, Calah, 12 and Resen (the great city located between Nineveh and Calah). 13 Mizraim was the ancestor of the Ludites, Anamites, Lehabites, Naphtuhites, 14 Pathrusites, Casluhites, and the Caphtorites, from whom the Philistines came. 15 Canaan’s oldest son was Sidon, the ancestor of the Sidonians. Canaan was also the ancestor of the Hittites, 16 Jebusites, Amorites, Girgashites, 17 Hivites, Arkites, Sinites, 18 Arvadites, Zemarites, and Hamathites. The Canaanite clans eventually spread out, 19 and the territory of Canaan extended from Sidon in the north to Gerar and Gaza in the south, and east as far as Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboiim, near Lasha. 20 These were the descendants of Ham, identified by clan, language, territory, and national identity.

Descendants of Shem

21 Sons were also born to Shem, the older brother of Japheth. Shem was the ancestor of all the descendants of Eber. 22 The descendants of Shem were Elam, Asshur, Arphaxad, Lud, and Aram. 23 The descendants of Aram were Uz, Hul, Gether, and Mash. 24 Arphaxad was the father of Shelah, and Shelah was the father of Eber. 25 Eber had two sons. The first was named Peleg (which means “division”), for during his lifetime the people of the world were divided into different language groups. His brother’s name was Joktan. 26 Joktan was the ancestor of Almodad, Sheleph, Hazarmaveth, Jerah, 27 Hadoram, Uzal, Diklah, 28 Obal, Abimael, Sheba, 29 Ophir, Havilah, and Jobab. All these were descendants of Joktan. 30 The territory they occupied extended from Mesha all the way to Sephar in the eastern mountains. 31 These were the descendants of Shem, identified by clan, language, territory, and national identity.

Conclusion

32 These are the clans that descended from Noah’s sons, arranged by nation according to their lines of descent. All the nations of the earth descended from these clans after the great flood.

I.       Key Facts

  1. The whole earth is repopulated by Noah’s three sons
  2. The sin of Ham
  3. Noah’s curse toward Canaan (Ham’s son)
  4. The death of Noah (950 years old)
  5. The families of Japheth, Ham, Shem

II.      Key Points

  1. Noah’s sin and bad choice shows us how godly people aren’t perfect
  2. Ham disrespects his father
  • Ham saw his father drunk and lying naked
  • He went outside and told his brothers
  • Shem and Japheth take a robe, hold it over their shoulders, walked into the tent backwards and turned their faces away, so they would not see their father lying naked (interesting observation is that sin is first exposed, and then covered)
  • Ephesians 6:2-3 “Honor your father and mother.” This is the first commandment with a promise. If you honor your father and mother, things will go well for you, and you will have a long life on the earth

3. The cursing of Canaan (Ham’s son)

  • Because of Ham’s sin against Noah, his bloodline is cursed

In this study, we will break down the Bible from B.C. to A.D. chronologically while offering historical context and real-life application for today. This series is brought to you by the Breakthrough Media Network.

00;00;27;21 - 00;00;42;10

Pastor Dave

Hi, my name is Pastor Dave Engman and this is my co-host, Scott Brekke, and we want to welcome you to the Bible Breakthrough, and we want to thank you for joining us. Ultimately, our goal is to lead you into a deeper, more intimate relationship with Jesus.

00;00;43;07 - 00;00;47;16

Scott

And then the show notes will be linked in the description of this episode.

00;00;48;17 - 00;01;15;21

Pastor Dave

In the last episode, we read Genesis 9:1 through 17 Repopulating the Earth, and we watched as God confirmed His new covenant. The Scripture we're going to cover today is Genesis 9:18 through chapter ten verse 32, about Noah's sons Shem, Ham, and Japheth. The questions that you should be considering as you listen are, what does this mean and how can I apply what I'm learning to my life?

00;01;15;29 - 00;01;38;23

Scott

Yep. So, before we read the Bible, let us pray like we always do. So, Lord, first of all, we love you. We thank you for letting us be able to do this. Lord, this is a privilege to be able to do this Lord and have fun doing it. Lord, teach us as we teach others because we want to be like you in Jesus’ name, Amen!

00;01;39;15 - 00;01;53;17

Pastor Dave

Amen! All right. So let us open the Bible and read starting in Genesis Chapter nine, verse 18.

00;01;54;14 - 00;01;57;16

Scott

By the way, before you start, good luck with all the names. (laughter)

00;01;59;01 - 00;01;59;20

Pastor Dave

Yeah, this is a challenge.

00;01;59;20 - 00;02;00;10

Scott

Lord, help him!

00;02;00;11 - 00;02;31;26

Pastor Dave

This is a challenge. The sons of Noah, who came out of the boat with their father were Shem Ham and Japheth. Ham is the father of Canaan. From these three sons of Noah came all the people who now populate the Earth after the flood Noah began to cultivate the ground, and he planted a vineyard. One day, he drank some wine that he had made, and he became drunk and lay naked inside his tent.

00;02;32;25 - 00;03;00;28

Pastor Dave

Ham, the father of Canaan, saw that his father was naked and went outside, and he told his brothers. Then Shem and Japheth took a robe, held it over their shoulders, and backed into the tent to cover their father. As they did this, they looked the other way so that they would not see him naked. When Noah woke up from his stupor, he learned what Ham his youngest son had done.

00;03;02;14 - 00;03;32;25

Pastor Dave

Then he cursed Canaan, the son of Ham. “May Canaan be cursed! May he be the lowest of servants to his relatives.” Then Noah said, “May the Lord, the God of Shem be blessed, and may Canaan be his servant! May God expand the territory of Japheth! May Japheth share the prosperity of Shem, and may Canaan be his servant.

00;03;33;27 - 00;04;32;28

Pastor Dave

Noah lived another 350 years after the Great Flood, he lived 950 years and then died. This is the account of the families of Shem Ham and Japheth, the three sons of Noah. Many children were born to them after the great flood. So, the descendants of Japheth were Gomer, Magog, Madai, Javan, Tubal, Meshech and Tiras. The descendants of Gomer were Ashkenaz, Riphath, and Togarmah. The descendants of Javan were Elishah, Tarshish Kittim, and Rodanim. Their descendants became the seafaring people that spread out to various lands, each identified by its own language, clan, and national identity.

00;04;34;27 - 00;05;08;23

Pastor Dave

The descendants of Ham were Cush, Mizraim, Put, and Canaan. The descendants of Cush were Seba, Havilah, Sabtah, Raamah, and Sabteca. The descendants of Raamah were Sheba and Dedan. Cush was also the ancestor of Nimrod, who was the first heroic warrior on the earth. Since he was the greatest hunter in the world, his name became proverbial.

00;05;09;20 - 00;06;14;18

Pastor Dave

People would say, “This man is like Nimrod, the greatest hunter in the world.” He built his kingdom in the land of Babylonia, with the cities of Babylon, Erech, Akkad, and Calneh. From there, he expanded his territory to Assyria, building the cities of Nineveh, Rehoboth-ir, Calah, and Resen, (the great city located between Nineveh and Calah). Mizraim was the ancestor of the Ludites, Anamites, Lehabites, Naphtuhites, Pathrusites, Casluhites, and the Caphtorites, from whom the Philistines came. Canaan's oldest son was Sidon, the ancestor of the Sidonians. Canaan was also the ancestor of the Hittites, Jebusites, Amorites, Girgashites,

00;06;14;18 - 00;06;54;06

Pastor Dave

Hivites, Arkites, Sinites, Arvadites, Zemarites, and Hamathites. The Canaanite clans eventually spread out and the territory of Canaan extended from Sidon the north to Garar and Gaza in the south, and east as far as Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboiim, near Lasha. These were the descendants of Ham identified by clan, language, territory, and national identity.

00;06;55;23 - 00;07;26;27

Pastor Dave

Sons were also born to Shem, the older brother of Japheth. Shem was the ancestor of all the descendants of Eber. The descendants of Shem were Elam, Asshur, Arphaxad, Lud, and Aram. The descendants of Aram were Uz, Hul, Gether, and Mash. Arphaxad was the father of Shelah, and Shelah was the father of Eber. Eber had two sons.

00;07;27;14 - 00;07;53;14

Pastor Dave

The first was named Peleg (which means “division”), for during his lifetime the people of the world were divided into different language groups. His brother’s name was Joktan. Joktan was the ancestor of Almodad, Sheleph, Hazarmaveth, Jerah, Hadoram, Uzal, Diklah, Obal,

00;07;54;27 - 00;08;44;06

Pastor Dave

Abimael, Sheba, Ophir, Havilah, and Jobab. All these were descendants of Joktan. The territory they occupied extended from Mesha all the way to Sephar in the eastern mountains. These were the descendants of Shem, identified by clan, language, territory, and national identity. These are the clans that descended from Noah’s sons arranged by nations, according to their lines of descent. All the nations of the earth descended from these clans after the great flood. So… that was a mouthful of names!

00;08;44;21 - 00;08;45;25

Scott

(laughter) You got through it, though!

00;08;46;26 - 00;08;56;11

Pastor Dave

And we certainly work to honor those names. Scott, what are the facts of the scripture that you discovered or as you see them?

00;08;56;18 - 00;09;24;08

Scott

Yep. So, I got five facts here. The first one is the whole earth is repopulated by Noah's three sons. The second one is the sin of Ham. And then we have Noah's curse towards Canaan, Ham’s son. And the fourth is the death of Noah at 950 years old. And then we have the families listed of Japheth, Ham, and Shem.

00;09;25;06 - 00;09;25;19

Pastor Dave

And…

00;09;26;10 - 00;09;54;19

Scott

Yeah, so and then we'll just jump in the key points. So, the first one I think is interesting because I'm not sure if it's a sin that he knew he was doing or if it was by mistake. So, I just wrote down the first key point is what Noah had did. Right? And he got drunk. You know, was that a sin that he knew he was doing or was it more of like by mistake?

00;09;55;07 - 00;10;17;21

Scott

And obviously, we see some things that happen after. Kind of shame comes. Someone comes in and he's, you know, obviously with drunkenness, if he knew it or not, he's naked and then he's seen by his son. And then all of a sudden, these effects happen because of that drunkenness. And then, of course, this is the first time we hear of drunkenness in the Bible.

00;10;17;21 - 00;10;46;16

Scott

And guess what? It doesn't come with anything good. So, my question to you is, do we know, or do you think that Noah… he got he got wasted on purpose? Do you think it was an accident? What do you think? What do you think of that? That part of getting drunk and knowing it or not or…

00;10;47;16 - 00;11;01;06

Pastor Dave

Well, whether he set out to do that intentionally or not, is obviously open for debate. Because it doesn't say that he did that intentionally.

00;11;01;21 - 00;11;02;00

Scott

Right.

00;11;03;17 - 00;11;19;14

Pastor Dave

And of course, as you already mentioned, we don't read of anybody else doing that up until this point. I think the point of the story is the fact that the son that discovered him, dishonored him.

00;11;19;25 - 00;11;20;05

Scott

Mm hmm.

00;11;20;27 - 00;12;01;04

Pastor Dave

And chose somewhat of a lack of respect. Yep. He could have done what his two brothers did in covering him, and he was protecting his father's dignity and his father's honor. And that would have shown a great deal of respect. And because he didn't do that, and I don't know, based on what we read, how he told his brothers, was he laughing about it, joking around that he was even making fun of his dad the reality is this… Noah was his father. Because of Noah's righteousness,

00;12;01;04 - 00;12;29;27

Pastor Dave

Noah's family, including the three sons, were included on the ark. Yeah. The father honored his family and his son dishonored him. So… there’s a consequence. And I think there's an application that could be made there as it pertains to one of the commandments that we read about later on that Moses got from the Lord in regard to honoring our parents.

00;12;30;10 - 00;12;57;10

Pastor Dave

I think it's just something for us to think about not just with our father or our mother, but with anybody that's in a position of leadership. Right. That you choose to come under, or you simply come under because of birthright. And so, I think we need to pause there for a moment, just really consider how important honoring people… how important it is to God.

00;12;57;20 - 00;13;20;07

Scott

Yeah. What would be… what would be one way that you would… outside of the story, what would one be like, one way that you would honor or respect someone who is in leadership? Like say that, you know, you were I don't know, maybe use the example of a job coming underneath leadership in that or maybe I could even speak into that a little bit.

00;13;20;07 - 00;13;26;11

Scott

But what would be one way of showing honor or respect? Obviously, in the story, it was, you know, a father, but...

00;13;26;11 - 00;13;52;10

Pastor Dave

Well, I think of it from the perspective of, you know, the chair that I sit in and at least in ministry, you know, I think every one of us, everyone is subjected to the temptations of sin daily. Yeah. And though we are righteous in the sight of the Lord made right before God, the father, we still are prone to sin.

00;13;52;10 - 00;14;35;28

Pastor Dave

And when we do, when we step into temptation, and we sin. An example would be honoring a spiritual father, for example, not making that sin known publicly. Honoring in the way Shem and Japheth did in protecting the dignity of the individual. Yeah. And recognizing that we're prone to sin, we need especially in the body of Christ, we need to be able to trust and respect, and to protect one another.

00;14;36;15 - 00;14;59;20

Pastor Dave

The enemy of our soul is constantly lurking like a lion or a tiger ready to pounce on us right and the last thing we need is somebody within our inner circle, somebody who's close to us, giving the enemy an open door to ridicule us or to diminish us in some way. So, that'd be an example.

00;14;59;24 - 00;15;20;19

Scott

Mm hmm. That's good. I like that. I thought it was interesting, just before we jump out of that, that Ephesians talks about this as a… honoring your father and your mother is this is kind of the first commandment with a promise. So, if you honor your father and mother, things will go well for you, and you will have a long life on the earth.

00;15;21;18 - 00;15;40;25

Scott

Then I see you know; we see that. I try to do the best I can at honoring people. Obviously, I'm still learning through that. But honoring respecting my parents as I grew up, that they're the head of the house and listening to them, because generally I just knew as being the young kid growing up, they probably knew better than me.

00;15;41;04 - 00;16;00;24

Scott

So, the more I listened to them, even though I didn't want to, and, sure, I made mistakes of not listening at times… we see just like the story when I disrespected my parents, things tended not to go as well. So. So just honoring your father and mother, I think that's cool that he gives us that promise that we'll live a long life on this earth.

00;16;00;24 - 00;16;40;03

Scott

So, let's move into like the cursing of Canaan. And I want… I'm just curious about this because I tried to dive into this a little bit and I was kind of wrestling because I'm like, why is it that Canaan gets cursed, but it's not Hamm who does the actual, you know, disrespecting of his father. Why doesn't he throw the curse on Hamm? But, you know, instead of instead of putting it on Ham’s son, which is Canaan.

00;16;40;17 - 00;16;50;25

Pastor Dave

Well, I think he did. He does? I think he did, and he did it by my putting that curse on Ham’s son, Canaan.

00;16;51;25 - 00;16;52;05

Scott

OK.

00;16;52;27 - 00;17;23;20

Pastor Dave

What it exposes, at least from my perspective, is it exposes the iniquities of our fathers and the propensity of sin to flow through the bloodline. The sins of the forefathers to how many generations, you know, and in this case, we can see that the sin of Ham, although we probably all would think to ourselves, boy, that was pretty harsh, right?

00;17;24;09 - 00;17;59;14

Pastor Dave

This is a pretty harsh consequence. Yeah. For something that doesn't necessarily seem to be that big of a deal. It points to just how big of a deal protecting the honor of and the dignity of a mother and a father really is to God. Yeah. Because God is the father of all humanity. And we must see the example that he used to set the stage for a life well lived.

00;18;00;19 - 00;18;28;20

Pastor Dave

And I'm hoping we see the correlation there. Now, Canaan being the son, I mean, we get to see and it's interesting when you look at it, we get to see the breakdown of the of the descendants of each of these sons. For example, with Ham, what we see is the descendants are the Canaanites, the Egyptians, the Philistines, the Hittites and the Amorites.

00;18;29;08 - 00;18;51;08

Pastor Dave

Now, you know, at this juncture in Bible history, where we're at right now, we don't have… if we're living in that period, we don't have the ability like we do today to look back and see what played out. Right. We don't have that 20/20…

00;18;51;13 - 00;18;51;26

Scott

Vision?

00;18;51;29 - 00;18;53;21

Pastor Dave

Vision as we look backwards.

00;18;53;21 - 00;18;54;07

Scott

Sure.

00;18;54;22 - 00;19;11;19

Pastor Dave

e in today's present time, in:

00;19;11;22 - 00;19;13;20

Scott

So, they all came through the descendants of Ham?

00;19;14;03 - 00;19;22;03

Pastor Dave

They all, it all flowed, starting with Ham, then to Canaan. That region of Canaan contained all of these tribes.

00;19;22;03 - 00;19;23;17

Scott

Yeah! That's interesting, I didn’t pick that up.

00;19;24;07 - 00;19;52;26

Pastor Dave

And I look at Japheth for a minute, you know, and we see the Greeks and they represented to us in the modern era of the New Testament, the Gentiles to a certain extent, any unbeliever that wasn't a Jew. But we know that the Greek language and the people of Greece played an important role. And then when you look at Shem, you see, well, who is his family lineage?

00;19;53;13 - 00;20;12;29

Pastor Dave

The Hebrews, the Sheldeans, the Assyrians, Persians, and Armenians, clearly indicating that the biblical line from Shem to Abraham, which we'll read about.

00;20;13;11 - 00;20;13;28

Scott

Next.

00;20;13;28 - 00;20;50;12

Pastor Dave

In the next episode. Yep. It flows… the descendant line flows from Shem to Abraham, from Abraham to Jesus. Right? So… interesting, nonetheless, reading these names, you know, in today's world, you know, you look at it and you might just want to think about skimming over it. And they're certainly more important to the people of those lines than they are maybe today to us. But we can certainly see that those people played a significant role in getting us where we are.

00;20;50;22 - 00;21;06;09

Scott

And that's something that... you say, like skimming over. That's something that I've been learning because a lot of times when I first would read through just a bunch of names, I'm like, OK, I'll just look at the names and skip by them. But then when you start to really dive deeper into them, you see there's some significance into it.

00;21;06;09 - 00;21;35;23

Scott

And even in… all the way back to Noah's sons, we know that if we keep reading on that, just as a fun fact, but that Jesus came through the line of Shem and so did obviously, David, and then we're going to read our next episode, so did Abraham. So… that's just something that I've been personally learning as I continue to read through these ones, because before I would… I’m just going be honest, I would just skip through those.

00;21;35;24 - 00;21;46;13

Scott

I'm like, OK, let's get to the good stuff. But then you miss these little… these little bits. So… (mumbling pause)

00;21;48;26 - 00;22;25;22

Scott

I don't know. Do you have anything that you want to talk about? I have just you know, obviously we just read through Noah. It probably would be OK thing that made we stop and recognize… I mean, he lived a long, healthy life… 950 years. He lived 350 years after the flood. Obviously, he’s a man great full of faith, but also that I think this story just kind of also recognize is it for me that before this, you know, it's just mentioned as a guy who walked with God, this was one who was found righteous.

00;22;25;22 - 00;22;50;26

Scott

But then also obviously moving on like we know that he's not, you know, clear of sin or a perfect human being. So even though he's found righteous, and he walked close with God, he still made mistakes, I think. So, it just helps me to know like, my goodness, was this guy like, perfect? Or man… no, no, he made mistakes, too. And that's like we all do make mistakes. So…

00;22;50;26 - 00;23;03;04

Pastor Dave

Yeah, and I think that points to the sincerity of his heart. And I think what God sees as the heart. Yeah. And the sincerity of the heart is at this stage anyway before Jesus.

00;23;03;04 - 00;23;03;11

Scott

Yeah.

00;23;04;24 - 00;23;09;27

Pastor Dave

That's what God used to measure a man's righteousness or the ability to be righteous.

00;23;10;05 - 00;23;10;11

Scott

Right.

00;23;10;22 - 00;23;44;14

Pastor Dave

And so, what's also interesting to me about this is that you know, prior to him building the ark, he worked the land. Noah was a farmer essentially… and then God, you know, God had a plan for him, obviously, and changed the direction at that stage in his life. And he became a carpenter. You know, and you'd have to… 100 years, you get a lot of time to practice being a good carpenter. (laughter)

00;23;44;14 - 00;23;47;26

Pastor Dave

He obviously was a good carpenter, in the end, he made the ark and it worked.

00;23;47;26 - 00;23;49;13

Scott

Yeah!

00;23;49;13 - 00;23;58;27

Pastor Dave

Until it came to a rest. But then we rediscover that he ends up going back to the land and becoming a…

00;23;59;26 - 00;24;01;05

Scott

Cultivator of the ground.

00;24;01;05 - 00;24;02;15

Pastor Dave

A cultivator of the ground.

00;24;02;25 - 00;24;03;05

Scott

Yup. Planted a vineyard.

00;24;03;14 - 00;24;11;29

Pastor Dave

He planted a vineyard and so God brought him back on that track of life.

00;24;14;11 - 00;24;42;02

Scott

e we're at currently is about:

00;24;42;23 - 00;25;04;06

Scott

So, and then obviously it's interesting to me that as we move into our next episode too, we're going to be talking about the Tower of Babel and the Great City. So just to help our audience kind of get on track to where we're going to be moving into. Obviously with that we're move into Abraham as well. So, are there any questions that came up as you read through that text at all?

00;25;06;12 - 00;25;07;29

Scott

That jumped off for you?

00;25;11;20 - 00;25;37;06

Pastor Dave

(long pause) No, I don't know that I, I, you know, other than what we've already discussed, I, I think we kind of know when you when you have the lineage and all the names and so forth over a piece of scripture that you're studying. I just think it's important to see and recognize that each of those lines or lineage of descent are important.

00;25;37;12 - 00;25;37;19

Scott

Yeah.

00;25;38;07 - 00;25;43;28

Pastor Dave

And so, I guess we'll get to see just how important in our next episode. Yeah.

00;25;44;25 - 00;26;03;29

Scott

So well, before we move on, I think we should really quick talk about what are we going to apply to this? You know, what do we what do we take from the Scripture even what to our audience like, what is God been talking to you about? What are you going to take from the Scripture and then apply it to today?

00;26;04;17 - 00;26;49;02

Scott

And I think it is for me that aspect of honor, respect, are we honor respecting, you know, not only like for me, my, my mom and dad, but then who in in my life, it could be someone at work who's in a leadership role. You know, for me in ministry, obviously, you Pastor Dave and then other people in the ministry that I come in come underneath their leadership, you know, and that's part of I think humility too, is knowing like God, I understand God has set up all the different authorities and different levels and God's the ultimate authority and person in top priority.

00;26;49;21 - 00;27;12;11

Scott

But also using the humility of recognizing, you know, God's put me in this position, and I need to come under people's authority and honor and respect them. Well, and in doing that, people will do be that for you. I was just reading this morning about the Golden Rule in the New Testament. How, you know, that we should treat others as we would like to be treated.

00;27;12;17 - 00;27;20;02

Scott

So, honor and respect, if you give honor and respect, you will receive that same honor and respect. So… that's the one application point that stood out for me.

00;27;20;12 - 00;27;38;08

Pastor Dave

And I think I would agree with that completely. And I also think, you know, as we read the Bible, we do recognize that we are to operate in humility, seeing others as greater than ourselves, which is an indicator of humility.

00;27;38;23 - 00;27;38;29

Scott

Right.

00;27;39;25 - 00;28;16;29

Pastor Dave

So, it's one of the things that we've been known to say is honor is the lifeblood of ministry. When you enter an atmosphere of honor or a culture, if you will, of honor… because we're not used to it, because we don't get it in the world at least as much as we might like; and when we come into a culture that is full of honor and that atmosphere is ripe with honor, we want to be a part of it.

00;28;17;19 - 00;28;45;00

Pastor Dave

We don't want to leave that. And that's the reality of a kingdom mentality. Yeah! You know? Jesus’ gospel to the world was the kingdom of God is near you now. In fact, it's here, you know, the kingdom is the realm in which the King is in charge and it's his domain. Yeah. And it's full of honor, and I think that's a huge part of it.

00;28;45;09 - 00;28;52;06

Pastor Dave

So, I think that, in and of itself, is probably the main course of the Scripture we read today. So…

00;28;52;25 - 00;28;53;21

Scott

Yeah.

00;28;54;19 - 00;29;16;14

Pastor Dave

All right. What about you our listening audience? Is there anything that you see that we haven't talked about that you could apply to your life? I would challenge you to consider that, to pray about that, to ask God, what is it? After all, you can have knowledge, but if you don't apply it, then what good is it?

00;29;18;00 - 00;29;23;15

Pastor Dave

All right. That being said, we want to thank you for being a part of this.

00;29;23;23 - 00;29;24;00

Scott

Yeah.

00;29;24;09 - 00;29;25;16

Pastor Dave

Thank you for being a part of this, Scott.

00;29;26;18 - 00;29;27;14

Scott

Yup! Fun as always.

00;29;27;23 - 00;29;56;05

Pastor Dave

On this journey. We want to thank you again our listening and watching audience. We look forward to our next meeting together in episode 12 as we discuss the scattering of the people the Tower of Babel and some descendants that fall from Shem to Abraham, as well as talk about the family of Terah, in our ongoing study of the greatest story ever told in the first era, beginnings.

00;29;57;01 - 00;29;58;00

Pastor Dave

We want to thank you. And God bless!

00;29;58;15 - 00;30;41;02

About the Podcast

The Bible Breakthrough
Breaking Down the Bible BC to AD
The Bible Breakthrough Podcast breaks down the Bible from BC to AD. In chronological order, we introduce historical context as we journey together from the beginning to the end. Get ready to experience the Bible in a new and fresh way, bringing understanding and revelation like never before, and discovering easy and practical ways to walk out the Bible in your day-to-day.

Have you ever opened your Bible and asked yourself?
• Where should I even start?
• What does this passage mean?
• How does this apply to my life?
• What does this have to do with today?
• Why can’t I understand what He is saying to me through His Word?

What do you do? Couple that with the pressures of daily life, and you, like many Christians, stop reading it altogether.

What is the outcome? Spiritual starvation! We are wired to hunger and thirst for this Word, and when we don’t read the Bible regularly, we begin starving to death spiritually.

If that is you, you are in the right place!

The Bible is a collection of 66 books laid out in “Canonical order,” which means the order in the books is typically arranged. It does not represent the order in which the events of the Bible unfolded, and therefore, for many people, it is just plain confusing.

The Bible Breakthrough will show you how to consume the Word like eating a meal. The Bible reveals ten eras of history, and we have created episodes for each era. We serve scripture to you in small bites that you can swallow and digest to satisfy the spiritual hunger you crave.
